Types of Resistors and their uses

What is a resistance?

It’s a property of any material to resist flow of current through it. According to this property materials are classified mainly into two parts. One is conductor another is insulator.

In conductors resistant is very less but in insulator resistance is very high.

In circuits resistance is mainly used for controlling the flow of current. They are also classified as under their construction and uses. Example: Carbon, Wire wound, ballast, PTC, NTC, varistor, LDR etc.

Types of Resistors and their uses

In this post we will talk about the carbon composition resistor.

These types of resistors are made of carbon powder and resin binder.

 

Carbon composition Resistors are can be further classified into two types.

1.Pallet Type

2.Filament type

Carbon resistors are used in the circuit for current limiting purpose. Carbon resistors has some merits and demerits. Lets discuss those…..

  • Merits:
  1. They are very small in size.
  2. They are light weight.
  3. High value of resistance can be obtained easily.
  4. They are suitable for high frequency circuits fir their low inductance value.
  5. Their temperature coefficient is very less. Usually varies from 0.02 to 0.1.
  • Demerits:
  1. Their current rating is limited.
  2. Difficult to make low value resistance.
  3. Humidity can affect their performance

 

When current passes through any resistor, it generates heat. During short circuit resistance becomes very low and current becomes very high. It generates enough heat to catch fire.
